Please forward to anyone or any lists who you think would be interested. Thanks!!

Transformative Tantra:Transgender, Transgressive, Transcendent
February 2nd and 3rd, 2008, 10 AM to 5 PM
Center for Sex and Culture, San Francisco

Barbara Carrellas, author of Urban Tantra and Dossie Easton, co-author of Radical Ecstasy and The Ethical Slut, join forces to explode the myths and embrace the power of SM, gender journeying and Tantra.

If you are curious about the ecstatic possibilities of Tantra and other energy-focused sexual paths, but have felt too queer, too gender-queer, too kinky, too slutty, or too down-to-earth to feel comfortable in traditional Tantra groups, you'll love this weekend-facilitated by two women who have spent their entire adult lives exploring perverted paths to ecstasy. Persons of all genders and lovers of all stripes are welcome.

What is/are your gender(s)? Your partners' gender(s)? Do you really have to choose only one? We'll look at what gender is and what it isn't, and then find new ways to express it, pervert it and play with it. Next, we'll explore sexual energy as a physical force that you can activate, build, shape, and ride to amplify all your erotic encounters. We'll end our first day with a shared journey, as we intertwine our experience of masculine and feminine and both and neither into a big ecstatic circle of breath.

On Sunday, we'll explore the different elements and styles of energy-sharing and power exchange in sexual relationships. Using techniques from Tantra and BDSM, and the occasional bit of rope, we'll experiment with consciously polarizing and uniting opposites: active and receptive, masculine and feminine, power and helplessness. Is it true that the further apart we polarize our roles, the hotter the spark that bridges the gap? Let's find out!

All genders, sexual preferences and orientations are welcome.

To register or for more info contact: <mailto:mail@sexandculture.org>mail@sexandculture.org or 415-255-1155. The full weekend workshop is available for $395 per person, early bird special of $360 if you reserve before January 1st.

Trans Tantra Introductory Evening
Friday, February 1, 2008
7 - 10 PM at the Center for Sex and Culture
$25 per person

Meet the authors Barbara Carrellas and Dossie Easton for an evening of chat and some experimental journeys in breath and consciousness. Get a taste of the weekend to come, satisfy your curiosity about Tantra and other energy-focused sexual paths, and discover how Tantra can help you unleash some unique abilities within yourself. Persons who have no experience in Tantra who intend to attend the full weekend are particularly encouraged to attend this evening, but all are welcome to join us for a taste of Tantra.

The Ron Paul “Revolution”, an Extreme Rightwing Threat

By STEVEN ARGUE

For the most part the Iowa caucuses were business as usual for the Democrat and Republican Parties. Among the Democrats, “Anti-war” and “pro-single payer health care” Democrat Dennis Kucinich put his support behind pro-war anti--single payer health care, Barrack Obama. Yet on the far right, anti-war Libertarian and Republican Ron Paul gained a stunning 10% of the vote.

Seeing the failure of the Democrats to deliver a candidate worth supporting; some left leaning individuals have been suggesting support to Ron Paul. One is anti-war Vietnam veteran Stan Goff, who suggested in his January 4, 2008 article ”Monkey Wrenching the System, Ron Paul’s Revolution” that people vote in the primaries for Ron Paul, switching party registration right away if they live in a state where such a move is necessary to vote in the Republican primaries.

At the root of the Ron Paul "revolution" is the dismantling of Social Security and the Department of Education as well as other basic social programs, and the elimination of worker and environmental protections. Advances like single payer health care? No way. Ron Paul's message is that you need to take care of yourself, and that there shouldn't be such government programs, nor such interference with private profit. While he puts forward reasons for not supporting going to war abroad, his domestic policies would ignite civil war at home.

In addition to pretending he's against all government, he's for outlawing abortion and supports the continued ban on same-sex marriage. He was one of the original co-sponsors of the "Marriage Protection Act".

He's also a religious extremist who thinks that creationism should be taught in the schools.

On race, Ron Paul was one of 33 Congress members to vote against the renewal of the Voting Rights Act, an act that was first passed to give Blacks in the south the right to vote. On a similar note, he says the Civil Rights Act violates the Constitution and impedes on individual liberties. Speaking of Blacks in Washington DC he states in campaign literature, "95 percent of African Americans in are semi-criminal or entirely criminal".

No wonder the American Nazi Party has close relations with him (see letter from Nazi Commander Bill White below). In addition, Ron Paul has the support of other white supremacists such as David Duke, and has knowingly taken donations from former KKK Grand Wizard Don Black.

Hell would freeze over before I'd support Ron Paul. And being an atheist; that will be a long time.

There are plenty of candidates to the left of the Democrats worth considering supporting who oppose the war, would preserve public education and Social Security, who would provide single payer or socialized medicine, and who aren’t raving racist, homophobic, and sexist “Libertarian” fanatics. Why not look at them rather than someone from the loony right?

I discuss some of the campaigns that may be worth supporting in the following article:

The Case for Socialized Medicine in the United States,
And the Struggle to Achieve It
By STEVEN ARGUE

Or here is a different version of the same article:
http://nyc.indymedia.org/en/2008/01/93820.html

*****************
American Nazi Party Chief says Ron Paul is one of us

Bill White, commander of the American National Socialist Worker’s Party, aka The American Nazi Party, wrote the following on the Nazi Vanguard News Network:

Comrades:

I have kept quiet about the Ron Paul campaign for a while, because I didn’t see any need to say anything that would cause any trouble. However, reading the latest release from his campaign spokesman, I am compelled to tell the truth about Ron Paul’s extensive involvement in white nationalism.

Both Congressman Paul and his aides regularly meet with members of the Stormfront set, American Renaissance, the Institute for Historic Review, and others at the Tara Thai restaurant in Arlington, Virginia, usually on Wednesdays. This is part of a dinner that was originally organized by Pat Buchanan, Sam Francis and Joe Sobran, and has since been mostly taken over by the Council of Conservative Citizens.

I have attended these dinners, seen Paul and his aides there, and been invited to his offices in Washington to discuss policy.

For his spokesman to call white racialism a “small ideology” and claim white activists are “wasting their money” trying to influence Paul is ridiculous. Paul is a white nationalist of the Stormfront type who has always kept his racial views and his views about world Judaism quiet because of his political position.

I don’t know that it is necessarily good for Paul to “expose” this. However, he really is someone with extensive ties to white nationalism and for him to deny that in the belief he will be more respectable by denying it is outrageous — and I hate seeing people in the press who denounce racialism merely because they think it is not fashionable.

Bill White, Commander
American National Socialist Workers Party

*********
Poor Bill White. He’s having trouble with his brand of racism, anti-Semitism, mass extermination, and genocide not being "in fashion". But hey, you've got to thank the knuckleheaded Nazi for confirming our suspicions on Ron Paul and Pat Buchanan! -Steven Argue

And further proving that contra dance attracts the most interesting and erudite, caller-philosopher Frederick Park (with added reputation of master storyteller) will be here from North Carolina to get us moving to 3 O’Clock Shadow, one of the best bands around and featuring our pal Erik Hoffman fiddling away.
Beginners are welcome, so tell the uninitiated. (Contra dance? What, pray tell, is that? An exuberant, easy-to-learn barn dance done to live old-timey music, with no partner or special attire required.)
Lesbians sentenced for self-defense
All-white jury convicts Black women

By Imani Henry
New York

Published Jun 21, 2007 2:58 AM
On June 14, four African-American women—Venice Brown (19), Terrain Dandridge (20), Patreese Johnson (20) and Renata Hill (24)—received sentences ranging from three-and-a-half to 11 years in prison. None of them had previous criminal records. Two of them are parents of small children.

Their crime? Defending themselves from a physical attack by a man who held them down and choked them, ripped hair from their scalps, spat on them, and threatened to sexually assault them—all because they are lesbians.

The mere fact that any victim of a bigoted attack would be arrested, jailed and then convicted for self-defense is an outrage. But the length of prison time given further demonstrates the highly political nature of this case and just how racist, misogynistic, anti-gay, anti-youth and anti-worker the so-called U.S. justice system truly is.

The description of the events, reported below, is based on written statements by a community organization (FIERCE) that has made a call to action to defend the four women, verbal accounts from court observers and evidence from a surveillance camera.

The attack

On Aug. 16, 2006, seven young, African-American, lesbian-identified friends were walking in the West Village. The Village is a historic center for lesbian, gay, bi and trans (LGBT) communities, and is seen as a safe haven for working-class LGBT youth, especially youth of color.

As they passed the Independent Film Cinema, 29-year-old Dwayne Buckle, an African-American vendor selling DVDs, sexually propositioned one of the women. They rebuffed his advances and kept walking.

“I’ll f— you straight, sweetheart!” Buckle shouted. A video camera from a nearby store shows the women walking away. He followed them, all the while hurling anti-lesbian slurs, grabbing his genitals and making explicitly obscene remarks. The women finally stopped and confronted him. A heated argument ensued. Buckle spat in the face of one of the women and threw his lit cigarette at them, escalating the verbal attack into a physical one.

Buckle is seen on the video grabbing and pulling out large patches of hair from one of the young women. When Buckle ended up on top of one of the women, choking her, Johnson pulled a small steak knife out of her purse. She aimed for his arm to stop him from killing her friend.

The video captures two men finally running over to help the women and beating Buckle. At some point he was stabbed in the abdomen. The women were already walking away across the street by the time the police arrived.

Buckle was hospitalized for five days after surgery for a lacerated liver and stomach. When asked at the hospital, he responded at least twice that men had attacked him.

There was no evidence that Johnson’s kitchen knife was the weapon that penetrated his abdomen, nor was there any blood visible on it. In fact, there was never any forensics testing done on her knife. On the night they were arrested, the police told the women that there would be a search by the New York Police Department for the two men—which to date has not happened.

After almost a year of trial, four of the seven were convicted in April. Johnson was sentenced to 11 years on June 14.

Even with Buckle’s admission and the video footage proving that he instigated this anti-gay attack, the women were relentlessly demonized in the press, had trumped-up felony charges levied against them, and were subsequently given long sentences in order to send a clear resounding message—that self-defense is a crime and no one should dare to fight back.

Political backdrop of the case

Why were these young women used as an example? At stake are the billions of dollars in tourism and real estate development involved in the continued gentrification of the West Village. This particular incident happened near the Washington Square area—home of New York University, one of most expensive private colleges in the country and one of the biggest employers and landlords in New York City. The New York Times reported that Justice Edward J. McLaughlin used his sentencing speech to comment on “how New York welcomes tourists.” (June 17)

The Village is also the home of the Stonewall Rebellion, the three-day street battle against the NYPD that, along with the Compton Cafeteria “Riots” in California, helped launch the modern-day LGBT liberation movement in 1969. The Manhattan LGBT Pride march, one of the biggest demonstrations of LGBT peoples in the world, ends near the Christopher Street Piers in the Village, which have been the historical “hangout” and home for working-class trans and LGBT youth in New York City for decades.

Because of growing gentrification in recent years, young people of color, homeless and transgender communities, LGBT and straight, have faced curfews and brutality by police sanctioned by the West Village community board and politicians. On Oct. 31, 2006, police officers from the NYPD’s 6th Precinct indiscriminately beat and arrested several people of color in sweeps on Christopher Street after the Halloween parade.

Since the 1980s there has been a steady increase in anti-LGBT violence in the area, with bashers going there with that purpose in mind.

For trans people and LGBT youth of color, who statistically experience higher amounts of bigoted violence, the impact of the gentrification has been severe. As their once-safe haven is encroached on by real estate developers, the new white and majority heterosexual residents of the West Village then call in the state to brutalize them.

For the last six years the political LGBT youth group FIERCE has been at the forefront of mobilizing young people “to counter the displacement and criminalization of LGBTSTQ [lesbian, gay, bi, two spirit, trans, and queer] youth of color and homeless youth at the Christopher Street Pier and in Manhattan’s West Village.” (www.fiercenyc.org) FIERCE has also been the lead organization supporting the Jersey Seven and their families.

The trial and the media

Deemed a so-called “hate crime” against a straight man, every possible racist, anti-woman, anti-LGBT and anti-youth tactic was used by the entire state apparatus and media. Everything from the fact that they lived outside of New York, in the working-class majority Black city of Newark, N.J., to their gender expressions and body structures were twisted and dehumanized in the public eye and to the jury.

According to court observers, McLaughlin stated throughout the trial that he had no sympathy for these women. The jury, although they were all women, were all white. All witnesses for the district attorney were white men, except for one Black male who had several felony charges.

Court observers report that the defense attorneys had to put enormous effort into simply convincing the jury that they were “average women” who had planned to just hang out together that night. Some jurists asked why they were in the Village if they were from New Jersey. The DA brought up whether they could afford to hang out there—raising the issue of who has the right to be there in the first place.

The Daily News reporting was relentless in its racist anti-lesbian misogyny, portraying Buckle as a “filmmaker” and “sound engineer” preyed upon by a “lesbian wolf pack” (April 19) and a “gang of angry lesbians.” (April 13)

Everyone has been socialized by cultural archetypes of what it means to be a “man” or “masculine” and “woman” or “feminine.” Gender identity/expression is the way each indivdual chooses or not to express gender in their everyday lives, including how they dress, walk, talk, etc. Transgender people and other gender non-conforming people face oppression based on their gender expression/identity.

The only pictures shown in the Daily News were of the more masculine-appearing women. One of the most despiciable headlines in the Daily News, “‘I’m a man!’ lesbian growled during fight,” (April 13) was targeted against Renata Hill, who was taunted by Buckle because of her masculinity.

Ironically, Johnson, who was singled out by the judge as the “ringleader,” is the more feminine of the four. According to the New York Times, in his sentencing remarks, “Justice McLaughlin scoffed at the assertion made by ... Johnson, that she carried a knife because she was just 4-foot-11 and 95 pounds, worked nights and lived in a dangerous neighborhood.” He quoted the nursery rhyme, “Sticks and stones will break my bones, but names will never hurt me.” (June 15)

All of the seven women knew and went to school with Sakia Gunn, a 19-year-old butch lesbian who was stabbed to death in Newark, N.J., in May 2003. Paralleling the present case, Gunn was out with three of her friends when a man made sexual advances to one of the women. When she replied that she was a lesbian and not interested, he attacked them. Gunn fought back and was stabbed to death.

“You can’t help but wonder that if Sakia Gunn had a weapon, would she be in jail right now?” Bran Fenner, a founding member and co-executive director of FIERCE, told Workers World. “If we don’t have the right to self-defense, how are we supposed to survive?”

National call to action

While racist killer cops continue to go without indictment and anti-immigrant paramilitary groups like the Minutemen are on the rise in the U.S., The Jersey Four sit behind bars for simply defending themselves against a bigot who attacked them in the Village.

Capitalism at its very core is a racist, sexist, anti-LGBT system, sanctioning state violence through cops, courts and its so-called laws. The case of the Jersey Four gives more legal precedence for bigoted violence to go unchallenged. The ruling class saw this case as a political one; FIERCE and other groups believe the entire progressive movement should as well.

Fenner said, “We are organizing in the hope that this wakes up all oppressed people and sparks a huge, broad campaign to demand freedom for the Jersey Four.”

FIERCE is asking for assistance for these young women, including pro-bono legal support, media contacts and writers, pen pals, financial support, and diverse organizational support. For details, visit www.fiercenyc.org.

The times I've been to Weight Watchers and places like that, I've enjoyed the support group/brainstorming part of it, where someone can come in with an issue -- "I'm going to a family potluck next week and I'm really worried about being pressured to eat too much," or something like that -- and the rest of the group can help think of solutions. But I've hated the sort of sloganeering infantilizing quality of the leadership, and I've found very little support for the social issues faced by queers, especially the questioning of beauty norms.

So it occurred to me: would anybody be interested in some sort of weekly get-together, maybe in the back room of a restaurant or library, where we could provide the good stuff for one another without the nasty corporate values? We could do weigh-ins if people found that appropriate, or not, or we could keep them optional. We could brainstorm solutions for eating and exercise issues, maybe find workout buddies, stuff like that. While it wouldn't be restricted to GLBT folks, we'd start by advertising it in our own communities; if hets felt like it was the right place for them, they could join us.

Does this pique anybody else's interest?

Got this in my email:

To: > > Dear friends,
> I have some pretty fantastic news.
> I have signed a contract with the
> owners of a club in Oakland to open a Girls Bar,
> which will be open 7 nights a week. Like the old
> days. The name of the club will be: "Velvet"
> I am so excited to be able to provide, for the first
> time in my career, a venue that will be open all
> the time, providing our community with a gathering
> space every day. No more 3rd Tuesdays, 4th
> Fridays just always open. Always
> there when you want company.
> We finally have a HOME BASE again.

> This is a very cool small club in the Laurel
> District of Oakland near the corner of Macarthur
> Blvd and 35th Avenue. It has 2 rooms, one for the
> bar and lounge and one with a pool table
> and djs on Thursday Friday and Saturday nights.
> It's a perfect size to keep a good party going every
> weekend. For the first time, I am going to rely
> almost exclusively on the internet to
> get the word out
> and I was hoping that you would take the time to
> forward this to as many women as you can.
> to get the word out
> through the network of women in our community.
> The opening night is Saturday March 17, 2007.
> We will open the doors at 9 pm. I
> recommend getting there early as this is a small
> building and we will fill up I'm sure. The
> space is very raw but very cool at this point
> as we grow we are going to
> develop the space and really
> turn it into a dream club. For now we get the
> doors open and throw on great music and explode
> with the amazing energy and
> experience you have come to
> know and trust when we all get together.
> Please,
> send this along to all of your friends even if you
> think they don't go out. Maybe they will tell all
> there friends. I really am asking a favor to help
> me spread the word. There will be a few ads and some
> flyers but this time I want to reach person to
> person. Woman to woman
> Help me spread the word.
> We have a home again. -Velvet- 3511 Macarthur
> Blvd. @35th Oakland Ca 94619 phone 510.531.3321
> velverOAKLAND@gmail.com The club is very easy
> to get to. Tons of parking.
> From SF. Take Bay Bridge toward Oakland.
> Take 580 towards Hayward
> take the 35th avenue exit.. Left at the light on 35th
> and left at Macarthur. It's on the left.
> From Berkeley:
> Take 80 West to 580 east and follow
> directions above.
> From North Bay:
> Richmond Bridge Towards Berkeley on 80.
> follow directions from Berkeley above.
> South Bay:
> Take 101 north to Bay Bridge.
> After bridge take 580 towards Hayward. Follow directions above.
> Spread the word.
> Velvet OAKLAND
> Opening night
> Saturday March 17th, 2007.
> Thanks so much for your help.
> See you there.
Persistent Vision Queer Media Arts Conference, June 19-22

Frameline is pleased to present Persistent Vision 2006: Envisioning the Future of Queer Media Arts, a four-day conference at the San Francisco LGBT Community Center and the Victoria Theatre, June 19-22. Taking its cue from the hugely successful Persistent Vision 2001, the 2006 conference will be a time for LGBT media-makers, programmers, distributors and others to discuss the state of the field and to chart what lies ahead for LGBT media arts. With the success of Brokeback Mountain, The L Word and Transamerica having thrust the LGBT community into the mainstream, the time is ripe to ask ourselves: Where are we? Whose images are not being seen? What are our next challenges? Featured keynote speakers are: film critic and cultural theorist B. Ruby Rich, writer and TV host Keith Boykin, and writer/director John Cameron Mitchell. The entire conference agenda is available at www.pv2006.org, where you can also register! Conference fees are $200 regular, $150 student. Questions? Feel free to email conference coordinators Matt Florence and Meg Daly at pv@frameline.org.

The mission of the NCSF - Education Outreach Program is to provide members
of the SM-Leather-Fetish, swing and polyamory communities educational information concerning relevant legal, medical and other issues. To provide education, as appropriate, to law enforcement, care providers, and other authorities about alternative sexuality, and to assist and support the outreach and education efforts of local communities.

Bio:
Jerome AKA 'TreasureDom' Bambrick has been a part of the SM/Leather/Fetish community since 1993. In that time he has been an officer of the Society of Janus, Staff officer/instructor for the House of Difference, Founder of smOdyssey, Founder of the Dungeon Monitors Association, Founder and three years Executive Director of the FolsomFringe and is currently a presenter for the National Coalition for Sexual Freedom (LEOP division).

He has been nominated by the Pantheon of Leather for Northern California's Man of the year, four years running, and is a nationally sought after instructor who has taught at groups and events such as: Black Rose, Society of Janus, Society of Janus 25th Anniversary, Kinky Kollege, SINSations in Leather, Santa Clara County Leather Association, Threshold, Noble, Texas Leather Pride, The Leather Leadership Conference. And more.

Robin Spector:
Robin has been an Attorney in the state of California since 1987. Her area of expertise is primarily Criminal law, having worked as a Deputy District Attorney for seven years, then as a Criminal defense attorney. She has been active in the SM/Leather/Fetish community for several years and is a proud presenter for the National Coalition for Sexual Freedom.

The Alleged Domestic Violence Call

It is important for SM-Leather-Fetish practitioners to understand law enforcement and the numerous legal issues that can affect us - specifically the response to an alleged domestic violence call. Once this is accomplished, you can constructively interact with law enforcement officers if the need arises. This presentation will focus on two aspects: (1) constructively dealing with officers, and (2) avoiding legal trouble. This workshop does not deal with the "cycle of abuse" or actual domestic violence; instead it is about consensual
SM being misinterpreted as domestic violence by law enforcement.

Traveling With Toys

While there have always been security issues involved in travel, the current
political climate, as well as new legislation, has changed the procedures
used to achieve security, as well as changing the allowable items to be carried
with the traveler. Security measures have been heightened as never before - to the point of creating a legal risk to individuals who practice alternative sexual _expression for traveling with items that are commonplace for us. This presentation will address these issues and provide tips for traveling with toys.

Life & Death Issues for the Alternative Community

This presentation assists those who practice alternative sexual _expression
in understanding more about the legal issues involving their relationships.
People who are involved in dedicated relationships outside of the traditional
"Heterosexual-marriage-with-children" often acquire property and incur liabilities together. Yet many fail to realize that these relationships will eventually end; either from separation, or as a result of death or disability. This presentation addresses some of the issues and problems that might be encountered, and gives guidance on how to prepare for them.

SM Groups & Law Enforcement: Group Issues

It is important that SM-Leather-Fetish groups understand the relationship between the SM community and law enforcement authorities, as well as the numerous legalities that can affect group functions. Once this is accomplished, groups can dispel myths, educate members, and constructively interact with law enforcement as the need arises. This presentation will focus on three aspects: (1) interacting with local law enforcement, (2) avoiding legal trouble, and (3) group considerations.

Doing SM Related Legal Research

The law is interpreted - sometimes to our favor, and sometimes not. For example, while the NCSF firmly believes that consensual SM activity between adults is legal, there are those that have a differing opinion and will intentionally interpret the law in an unfavorable way. Therefore, it is extremely important for the SM-Leather-Fetish communities to have an understanding of the laws that may affect us. Knowing relevant laws will greatly assist our communities in safely organizing and maintaining SM-Leather-Fetish activities and functions. This presentation attempts to help those doing research navigate the sometimes complex waters that we find ourselves in legally.

Protecting Yourself Legally

Members of the SM/leather/fetish communities have always had some level of concern regarding the issues of privacy, discretion, and personal security. The radical right, employers, ex-partners, and others may pose threats to these concepts. Many times their motivation comes from ignorance, but new motivations like custody of children, and revenge are also becoming commonplace. This presentation provides tips for protecting yourself legally for various circumstances

She's recently relocated to the area from the Southwest. Once people start knowing about her it's going to be hard to get appointements with this woman! Check her out.

About Karens approach, let me sing her praises!! Her private lessons are the best I've had in any yoga, body worker or pilates instructor yet and I've taken a lot being a dancer and athlete for some 22 years. In her work she brings in some type of body energy work/modality that allows the work you do together to cut right to point. The work feels explorative and intuitive and very opening. She pushes me in ways I've needed to be pushed and has a great sense of humor while doing it. She helps me relax. I have a lot of tension I didn't even realise I had, yikes! She's helping me build awareness about how I move, so that I can make changes. She's not fitness craze oriented. The focus feels balance and health oriented, very insightful and fun. She's a bit of a comedian, I think you'll like her as much as I do!

Karen Fox foxdanzing@yahoo.com
Enjoy!

Several groups in the Dimond neighborhood are working together to plan an outdoor community fair for sometime after mid-April. The event will be held in a parking lot near the intersection of Fruitvale & MacArthur, will feature live music, informational booths and tables, multicultural activities of various kinds and will be several hours in length.

We'd like to invite community organizations, local businesses and public agencies to contact us about having a booth or table at the fair. At this time there is no charge for participation. You can also arrange to have your literature placed on our general information table.
Let me know if you are interested in participating :)
The goal of this research was to study the relationship between sexual functioning and anxiety in two groups: lesbians and heterosexual women. One interest was in investigating whether there are differences in anxiety and sexual functioning between heterosexual women and lesbians. Additionally, based on prior results, I hypothesized that anxiety is negatively correlated with sexual functioning among both heterosexual women and lesbians.
Participants were 42 women in lesbian relationships and 78 women in heterosexual relationships recruited through announcements posted on internet sites. Women over the age of 18 who were in a monogamous romantic relationship for at least 6 months were eligible to participate. The average age for lesbians was 30.05 years and the average age for heterosexuals was 28.77 years. The majority of participants were Caucasian, (76.2% of lesbians and 78.2% of heterosexuals), with smaller proportions of American Americans, Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders, and Hispanics. The average length of the current relationship was 40.13 months for lesbians and 38.91 months for heterosexuals.
One of the questionnaires used in this research measured anxiety. I found that lesbians and heterosexuals reported similar levels of anxiety. Another questionnaire that I used asked for reports of sexual functioning. I found that lesbian participants reported higher levels of arousal and orgasm than heterosexual participants, but that the groups did not differ in reports of desire, lubrication, satisfaction, pain, or overall sexual functioning. Additionally, I found that the various aspects of sexual functioning correlate with one another differently for lesbians and for heterosexuals. When I analyzed the relationship between anxiety and sexual functioning, I found different results in the lesbian and heterosexual groups. Among lesbian women, anxiety was not related to any aspect of sexual functioning. However, among heterosexual participants higher anxiety was associated with higher reports of pain and lower reports of orgasm, lubrication, and overall sexual functioning. In other words, the results suggest that anxiety is negatively related to sexual functioning among heterosexuals, but that it is unrelated to sexual functioning among lesbians. Again, I want to express my thanks to the women who participated in my research. My findings were intriguing, and I am looking forward to conducting more extensive research on this topic in the future.
